Environmental filtering controls soil biodiversity in wet tropical ecosystems

چکیده
The environmental factors controlling soil biodiversity along resource gradients remain poorly understood in wet tropical ecosystems. Aboveground is expected to be driven by changes nutrient availability these ecosystems, however, much less known about the importance of driving biodiversity. Here, we combined a cross-continental survey across regions with three decades' field experiment adding nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) (100 kg N ha−1y−1 100 P ha−1y−1) Hawai'ian forests contrasting substrate ages (300 4,100,000 years) investigate influence explain bacteria, fungi, protists, invertebrates key functional genes. We found that was acidification during long-term pedogenesis gradients, rather than limitations. In fact, our results showed experimental additions caused substantial soils from Hawai'i. These declines pH were related large decreases ecosystems four continents. Moreover, microbial activity did not change response additions. concluded filtering drives multiple organisms, effects associated can further create undesired net negative on overall naturally acid soils. This knowledge integral for understanding management globally.

Biodiversity Assessment of Tropical Island Ecosystems
In tropical countries, upland forests, mid-elevation and lowland agriculture and coastal zones used to provide most if not all of the goods and services that local populations relied on for their livelihood. The forests provided necessary building materials as well as supplies for boat construction, and a host of food products and medicinal plants. The lowland areas provided all agricultural st...

The acronym PABITRA stands for Pacifi c-Asia Biodiversity Transect. PABITRA is a fl exible design of a transect system that connects a number of island areas in the tropical Pacifi c (i.e. Oceania) into a network of sites as living landscapes. The sites include upland/ inland forests, agro-ecosystems, and coastal habitats with coral reefs, which on islands are close together and interconnected ...

متن کاملNitrogen deposition contributes to soil acidification in tropical ecosystems.
Elevated anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition has greatly altered terrestrial ecosystem functioning, threatening ecosystem health via acidification and eutrophication in temperate and boreal forests across the northern hemisphere. However, response of forest soil acidification to N deposition has been less studied in humid tropics compared to other forest types. This study was designed to expl...
